Growing up in Chicago, it was eye-opening to come out West on my own at age 16. The freedom of living as an adult, combined with the joy of discovering beautiful new places fueled an intense passion that has never left. In the West, I found amazing and diverse landscapes all around, and have been driven to share these discoveries through photography ever since.
I still own the old Agfa 35mm rangefinder I was gifted in 1980, and in 1987 bought my first Nikon SLR. I have a closet filled with slides from the pre-digital era. Currently, I shoot with a digital full-frame Nikon, the D810, which is capable of producing the high-quality images needed for my work.
Over the years I have produced work for commercial calendars (Yosemite and Tahoe) and a variety of publications that include tourism, agriculture, and the environment. My first public print show was in 1991, and I've been showing and selling in various venues in California and Oregon ever since. For the past five years my work has been sold exclusively at three galleries in Northern California and Southern Oregon to clients locally and around the world.
As a self-taught photographer, the learning curve was a bit longer for me, but this gave me ample time to discover a personal style people familiar with my work can usually recognize. I feel I can connect with the viewer by drawing them in: first from a distance with bold lines and colors, then up close with the richness of detail. I love when an image shows extraordinary lighting, a subtle mood, or the sheer excitement of the moment. The prints are made large, on high gloss metal for emphasis.
My favorite part of the whole process, from concept to print, is being outdoors in the Western landscape. I appreciate being able to hike to places relatively few people choose to go and am grateful to have many years of photographic knowledge and expertise to effectively share this with the world.
In my work, I strive for simplicity, from equipment and mobility to composition. I process almost entirely from single images, restoring a scene's depth and resonance in Lightroom and Adobe CC, paying meticulous attention to detail. If the lighting and colors look real, if the composition conveys the inspiration that caused me to capture and process the image in the first place, I feel I have succeeded.
